In July of 1970 after being in Phu Loi, Vietnam, for four months a helicopter base and home of the Air CAV located 30 miles north of Saigon, we got the news that five of us were being transferred to Vung Tau.

Vung Tau -- Where in the world was it? Was it some kind of hell hole or what? What were we getting into? A hundred questions and the answer was wait and see. After loading up our personal belongings we headed out to Long Binh 40 miles or so down Highway 1.

Pulling into the company area at Long Binh, A company 720th Military Police, a SP4 Blossom came up to us saying excitingly, "Hey would any of you guys want to stay in Long Binh and I'll take your place in Vung Tau?" The answer was "No," for we now knew from Blossom's fervor that this Vung Tau must be a lot nicer than the behemoth red dirt farm known as Long Binh. Two hours later we pulled into the company area of the 720th in Vung Tau.

Standing in formation, we were told just how safe this place was, that the war had not touched it much. The town was on limits, rumors persisted that the V.C. R&R'ed here the whole time I was in Vung Tau.
