My orders for Nam came in December of 1969. Part of them required me to attend the Postal Management Institute in Bethesda, MD, from 2-3/70. They trained me there to run an APO. In one of my classes the leader said if you were to get one plum assignment in Nam it would be Vung Tau. I half paid attention to that part because I never got that lucky.
When I got to the Bien Hoa Replacement Station in 4/71 and received my assignment, they said I would have the 41st APU in Vung Tau. I said to myself that the name sounded familiar for some reason but it wasn’t until I got there that I realized that I had gotten the “plum” assignment!
